Different Types of Boilers to Install

Are you thinking about getting a new boiler installed in your home? Once you’ve discovered which manufacturer is right for you, you then need to ask yourself which type of boiler is most suitable. The three most common types are combi, system and conventional, each with a range of pros and cons. 

Condensing boilers

Condensing boilers are not a type of boiler, rather something that all boilers are required to be. Condensing technology allows boilers to be over 90% efficient, as they reuse heat that would otherwise be wasted. Any new boiler you install will be condensing, as this is now the law. 

Conventional boilers

Conventional boilers require the most components of the three, as they need two water tanks and a storage cylinder. When water is stored in the cylinder, heat energy can be lost, so you need to make sure you have insulated it correctly. 

Conventional boilers are ideal for homes with plenty of space, that also require a lot of hot water. They are also compatible with older radiator systems as the pressure is lower than with the other two common types. 

System boilers 

System boilers could be seen as a good middle ground between conventional and combi boilers. They are ideal for homes that require a lot of hot water, but don’t have the space for the components required for a conventional boiler. 

System boilers operate with a water storage cylinder and one water tank, meaning they will still require you to have some loft space available. Having a water tank means they can easily meet s high demand for hot water. Although the tank has the same drawbacks as mentioned above. 

Combi boilers

Combi boilers are perfect for smaller homes that have a lower demand for hot water. They operate from mains pressure, meaning they heat water as and when you need it. Not only does this mean you won’t have to wait for hot water, but it also makes them very efficient. Combi boilers only require a boiler unit, so they require little space in your home.
